JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5, Msgr. Arthur Tonne:  A woman tourist in Florida was admiring an Indian’s necklace.  “What are those things?” she asked, examining it more closely.  “Alligator teeth,” replied the Native American.  “Oh,” smiled the woman.  “I suppose they have the same value for your people that

pearls do for us.”  “Not quite,” said the Indian. “Anybody can open an oyster.”

Good Shepherd Parish

Message from Monsignor Mathieu

(edited excerpts from the homily preached on June 28-29 in advance of the official merger on July 1)

To prepare uniting our six churches into the one Good Shepherd Parish, I established a single school board to support our two Catholic schools. Very soon, a single cemetery board will oversee our two cemeteries. There is now one parish checkbook to pay our bills. As required by civil and Church law, we have also set aside and protected gifts of money that had been donated for specific purposes. … I have established a single Pastoral Council and a single Finance Council as required by Church norms. With the help of Fr. Kent and Fr. Greg, with the two parish coordinators―Paula Moses for business affairs and Sister Angela Fortier for pastoral matters―with our deacons, our two principals, and a very experienced staff, we are prepared to strengthen the efforts of our Catholic community to proclaim as clearly and vibrantly as possible the saving message of Jesus Christ. ... We are 14,800 registered members. Despite fewer clergy, we are exploring new ways to organize our ministries while safeguarding the special role of priests as shepherds, teachers, and sanctifiers. We are trying to become more efficient by combining our business and pastoral staffs when it is helpful to do so. We wish to become expert at using the new technologies available to us. … At the same time, we continue to need the support of Catholics who participate weekly at any one of our six churches. Each church needs looking after, liturgical ministers, catechists, volunteers, and experts of every kind. … In the near future, we must make decisions forced upon us by the cost of heating oil. Before the winter months, we must be prepared to have a clear plan about the use of our buildings for maximum efficiency. … At the same time, we want to give attention to the many Catholics who do not regularly participate in the life of the parish. We miss them and we need them to better do the work of the Gospel. … We also want to find new ways of reaching out to youth and young adults, to encourage Christian marriages and Church vocations, to cooperate with all people of good will in the care of those in our community suffering because of poverty or other reasons. There are large numbers of elderly people in our community. We want to offer grateful service to those who built this community we love so much. … In September, we will begin setting goals for our new parish in a more specific manner. In November, a cluster-wide parish mission will reach out to the whole community. And we will continue to work to unite both the Lyman and Old Orchard Beach parishes into the one Good Shepherd Parish by the year 2010. … Our new parish is composed of people as different from each other as were the apostles Peter and Paul. But like them, when push comes to shove, we are all alike in our love for Jesus Christ. It is this love for our Lord that will permit us to begin to live together in a new way, willing to give a bit of room for one another’s weaknesses, eager to benefit from one another’s strengths. … Consider what you can do personally to help the Church prosper in our community.

May They Rest in Peace: Please pray for those whose funerals were celebrated last week in Good Shepherd Parish: Sylvia Labonte (born 1938), Maurice Turcotte (born 1923), Charles Landry (born 1916), Robert Paradis (born 1925), Doris Keen (born 1935), Raymond “Tim” Lavigne (born 1930), Robert Rocray (born 1937) and Conrad Grenier (born 1921). May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

How to reach our Pastoral Office: Sr. Angela Fortier, our Pastoral Coordinator, and the Faith Formation team of Nancy Labbé, Sue Dick, Karen Laverriere, and Kim Perrigo, are located at the Good Shepherd Pastoral Center, 41 Sullivan St., Biddeford. They handle all religious education, youth ministry, sacramental preparation, RCIA/C, requests for sacramental certificates, and other pastoral initiatives. The main telephone number is 282-4812.

Visitation Program: We would like to begin by thanking everyone who volunteers their time to visit the elderly and sick. As we come together as Good Shepherd Parish we are working to develop practices in how we can best serve our community within both Biddeford and Saco, and soon Lyman and Old Orchard Beach. Beginning this August there will be a process implemented for those visiting the sick and homebound which we, the staff, hope will help best serve you and those who are in need. It is extremely important that we are aware of the elderly and homebound who are being visited on a daily/weekly basis, as well as who is visiting. If you are distributing Holy Communion to anyone in the community we ask you to continue to meet their needs and help us to identify those requiring Communion, Anointing of the Sick, and visits. So, on August 2nd every church within Biddeford and Saco will adopt a new process in which we will provide a sign-up sheet in the sacristy with information including your name, phone number, the individual(s) you are visiting, their address, etc. This information is key for us to gather, and the process is simple. Prior to Mass, you will be asked to bring your pix into the sacristy and complete the visitation form. Following Communion you will be asked to come forward to collect your pix with the elements in them. Please remember that it is important to distribute the Eucharist to the sick and homebound as quickly as possible after leaving the church. Your ministry is greatly appreciated as you bring the prayers of the parish, the scripture of that day, and the Body of Christ. We invite you to always contact us if you have any questions and/or know anyone who would like to be visited by calling Deacon Kevin at the Pastoral Office, 282-4812 ext 108. If you would like to visit or know of anyone who needs Anointing of the Sick, you may call the number above. Thank you again for all your great work as you bring the support to those in need.

St. Brendan’s Celebration: Mark your calendars for July 26 and 27! Msgr. Mathieu will celebrate St. Brendan’s feast day at both the Saturday and Sunday Masses at the chapel. The restoration of the chapel will be commemorated with receptions on the front lawn following both Masses. For more information please contact Ken Buechs, 282-3954 or kbuechs@earthlink.net.

St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Cemeteries: Just a note to let every-one know that St. Mary’s Cemetery and St. Joseph’s Cemetery have merged. The new name is Cemeteries of Good Shepherd Parish. We have a new phone number, 207-282-0747, and a new address, P.O. Box 391, Biddeford, ME  04005, and also a new Board of Directors. If you have any questions regarding this new merger, please call the phone number above. We will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Thank you, Flora and Bob Nichols for sharing your magnificent garden flowers (peonies and lilies) these past weeks to grace our Most Holy Trinity worship space. If anyone else wishes to donate some seasonal long-stemmed flowers to enhance our worship environment, please contact Dottie Pribish at 282-4666.

Church Life

Our First Effort! Last Saturday’s Bake Sale at the Saco Farmer’s Market was the first Good Shepherd activity since the establish-ment of our new parish on July 1st and it was a great success on many fronts! As a fundraiser the Bake Sale brought in $840 for our parish. In addition, folks from different Biddeford and Saco churches baked for the sale, others worked at the sale, and others showed their support by purchasing some of the wonderful sweets we had for sale. All in all a great way to build community within our new parish. Lastly, with our Good Shepherd banner across the front of our Bake Table, and with bulletins and Vacation Bible School material available for handouts, we were able to share information about our new parish with those who stopped by. In that way the Bake Sale was one more small step for evangelization within our community. Great thanks to all who baked, worked, or bought at our Bake Sale. In particular special thanks to the Parish Life Commission who organized and led this effort. (Plates, baskets, Tupperware, etc., used to deliver goodies to the Bake Sale may be picked up in the conference room at Most Holy Trinity Church.)

Available to Borrow: On June 16, Monsignor Mathieu was interviewed on The Issue Hour for Biddeford’s local access Channel 3. The 50 minute program has been running from time to time on Biddeford cable. Monsignor explained in detail some of the challenges our new parish will face in the months ahead. If you missed it or if you live outside Biddeford, you are welcome to borrow a copy of one of the DVDs made of the program by contacting the administrative office at Most Holy Trinity Church (282-3321). Thanks to The Issue Hour for permission to copy the DVD.

Father Pat Martin Relocating: As of August 1, Fr. Pat will be moving to New York City while continuing to write and preach parish missions throughout North America. Many will miss him in the community. He has been a welcome, friendly presence in the rectory.

Developing Households of Faith

Next Sunday’s Gospel is Matthew 13: 44–46. “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

Questions of the Week listed below and are designed to help your reflection and sharing with your family prior to coming to Sunday Mass.

Adult Question: What would you be willing to “sell” or do without in order to achieve your dreams for yourself or your family?

Child Question: What good thing do you want so much that you would give up something else to get it?

“Regarding family-centered religious education…. Evidence suggests that programs best affect students when the family is considered part of the religious education team. When faith does not support home activities, many youth fall prey to a religious skepticism that grows and festers. The most successful programs involve parents sharing their faith and receiving nurturance from each other, their children, and the extended family of faith.”

From Family Centered Church, A New Parish Model by Gerald Foley.

Religious formation is a lifelong process. The Faith Formation Office is dedicated to guiding, encouraging, and supporting adults and children in their ongoing spiritual enrichment. The staff strives to support all parents in their role as the primary educators of faith for their children. We are here to help you!

One of our goals is to help parents bring practical faith experiences into everyday life at home.

Parents, we offer you a chance to be involved in the faith development of your child through your participation in our Faith Formation programs. Our programs range from pre-K through 5th grade, Jr. High Youth Ministry for 6th through 8th grade students, and High School Youth Ministry for 9th through 12th grade students. To receive registration information for the fall programs, or if you would like to know more about our other programs, please call Nancy Labbé, Sue Dick, or Karen Laverriere at the Faith Formation office, 282-4812.

A child must attend a Family Catechesis/Religious Education program and be present at Mass for at least the year prior to starting preparation for the reception of the sacraments. The earliest any child is available to receive the sacraments would be during the second grade, or after the completion of his or her seventh year of age.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church

“The Latin Church… reserves the admission of Holy Communion to those who have attained the age of reason…” (CC1244). The Church canonically interprets “the age of reason” to be the completion of the seventh year of age. “At the completion of the seventh year of age one is presumed to have the use of reason” (Can.97).

2008–2009 Catechist Sign-Up: We are recruiting volunteers to be catechists next fall Lesson plans, activities, and supplies are provided. All catechists take part in Safe Environment Training and are provided opportunities to deepen their faith and learn new methods of catechesis through workshops. If you are interested in sharing your faith with the children please contact the Religious Education Office at 282-6392.

Catechesis aims “to put people not only in touch, but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ”

The National Directory for Catechesis

Junior High Youth Ministry: The Youth Group will continue to serve our community at the Bon Appétit meal program through the summer. If you are interested in volunteering some time please call Karen at 282-4812 or e-mail k.laverriere@hotmail.com for more information or to register.

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:23MjjfdhlkWY2M:http://www.stagatha.org.au/assets/images/autogen/a_family_rcic.gif      If you have a child seven years of age or older who has never received any religious education or has not been Baptized, we would like to welcome them to be part of our children’s Initiation Process (RCIC). This journey prepares the child and their family for reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. We are now interviewing families and we would love to work with you. If you have any interest or need to get more information call Nancy Labbé at 282-4812.

We highly recommend that parents call us while they are expecting to make plans to prepare for their child’s Baptism.

We will be offering Baptism Preparation every month, so it is really important that if you know anyone who is expecting to please have them call us so we can help them prepare for this wonderful event! We look forward to working with young parents and it seems a lot easier on the parents to attend the Baptism Prep Sessions before the little one arrives. Call your Office of Faith Formation for more information.

Inspirational Quote for Today—“Life is made up of little things.  It is seldom that occasion offers itself for doing a great deed.  True greatness consists in being great in all little things.  Let us be willing to keep doing a little good rather than waiting to do a great deal of good all at once.”—Dr. W. S. K. Yeaple

A Scriptural Reflection on Stewardship--Today’s first reading reminds us that “Those who are just must be kind.”  If our words and deeds are kind and selfless, we will be like the good seed in the Gospel parable and gathered as wheat in the Lord’s harvest.

LIFE-LONG LEARNING:  From the moment of our first breath and all the moments thereafter we are in a process of Life-Long Learning, whether it’s learning that the fist which is initially used for sucking on becomes―wonder of wonders―

fingers that can grasp objects for inspection and draw things to ourselves to be further gnawed on, or the first toddling steps of our faith journey as Catholics and drawing towards ourselves for inspection the spiritual dimension of our lives, we are forever unraveling the mystery, gift and graces of our existence.

One of the ways our parish offers assistance to parents and grandparents to help unravel the treasure and traditions of our Catholic faith for our parish children is in classroom-based faith formation and sacramental preparation programs. We have a loyal and conscientious team of Catechists who are looking forward to fostering our children’s relationship with Jesus and His Church.  We invite you to register your child/grandchild/teen for the new sessions which will begin in September. Yellow registration forms may be found in the Vestibule.  FMI call our PCL Edith Forst at 284-3736, or request an application via email: eforst.stphilip@verizon.net.

MANY, MANY THANKS go out to the crew of workers who put in many hours to make the Yard Sale such a GREAT success. Special thanks go out to everyone who donated their “treasures” to help raise monies for the Parish.  Your Support is appreciated!  Thank You.

Give us to drink the wine of compassion, give us to eat the bread that is you; Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true. - Marty Haugen

PAUL OF TARSUS

On the road to Damascus “Christ made me his own.”

In Paul’s apostolate difficulties were not lacking, which he faced with courage for love of Christ. Paul makes it clear that he would not have been able to face difficult and at times desperate situations if he did not have a reason of absolute value, before which nothing could be considered insurmountable. For Paul, this reason is Jesus Christ of whom he writes: “The love of Christ impels us… .”

ADULT ED Opportunity begins in September: The Acts of the Apostles tell us much about St. Paul, but also a group of Letters that have come directly from his hand and which, without intermediaries, reveal his personality and thought. We will use the book Paul, Least of the Apostles: The Story of the Most Unlikely Witness to Christ by Alain Decaux to learn more about this “apostle by vocation” and “apostle by the will of God.”  First Gathering: Wednesday, September 17 6:30 pm – Parish Hall Classroom. All are welcome!

RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of ADULTS – Are you an adult who has been considering or may be interested in becoming a member of the Catholic faith and not quite sure what to do about it? Are you an adult who, for one reason or another, has been baptized yet has not celebrated the Sacraments of Holy Eucharist (Communion) or Confirmation?                              OR

Do you have a child or grandchild age 7 or older who has not been baptized? Or has not celebrated the sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist or Confirmation?  RCIA adapted for children is a program where these children come together and are invited on a spiritual journey in preparation for the reception of these Sacraments.  FMI Please call our PCL Edith Forst at 284-3736 or email: eforst.stphilip@verizon.net.
