Good Shepherd Parish
Message from Monsignor Mathieu
(edited excerpts from the homily preached on June 28-29 in advance of
the official merger on July 1)
To prepare uniting our six churches into the one Good
Shepherd Parish, I established a single school board to support our two
Catholic schools. Very soon, a single cemetery board will oversee our two
cemeteries. There is now one parish checkbook to pay our bills. As required by
civil and Church law, we have also set aside and protected gifts of money that
had been donated for specific purposes. … I have established a single Pastoral
Council and a single Finance Council as required by Church norms. With the help
of Fr. Kent and Fr. Greg, with the two parish coordinators―Paula Moses
for business affairs and Sister Angela Fortier for pastoral matters―with
our deacons, our two principals, and a very experienced staff, we are prepared
to strengthen the efforts of our Catholic community to proclaim as clearly and
vibrantly as possible the saving message of Jesus Christ. ... We are 14,800
registered members. Despite fewer clergy, we are exploring new ways to organize
our ministries while safeguarding the special role of priests as shepherds,
teachers, and sanctifiers. We are trying to become more efficient by combining
our business and pastoral staffs when it is helpful to do so. We wish to become
expert at using the new technologies available to us. … At the same time, we
continue to need the support of Catholics who participate weekly at any one of
our six churches. Each church needs looking after, liturgical ministers,
catechists, volunteers, and experts of every kind. … In the near future, we
must make decisions forced upon us by the cost of heating oil. Before the
winter months, we must be prepared to have a clear plan about the use of our
buildings for maximum efficiency. … At the same time, we want to give attention
to the many Catholics who do not regularly participate in the life of the
parish. We miss them and we need them to better do the work of the Gospel. … We
also want to find new ways of reaching out to youth and young adults, to encourage
Christian marriages and Church vocations, to cooperate with all people of good
will in the care of those in our community suffering because of poverty or
other reasons. There are large numbers of elderly people in our community. We
want to offer grateful service to those who built this community we love so
much. … In September, we will begin setting goals for our new parish in a more
specific manner. In November, a cluster-wide parish mission will reach out to
the whole community. And we will continue to work to unite both the Lyman and

Developing Households of Faith
Next Sunday’s Gospel
is Matthew 13: 44–46. “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a
field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that
he has and buys that field.”
Questions of the Week
listed below and are designed to help your reflection and sharing with your
family prior to coming to Sunday
Adult Question: What would you be willing to “sell” or do without in
order to achieve your dreams for yourself or your family?
Child Question: What good thing do you want so much that you would
give up something else to get it?
Faith
Formation Programs
“Regarding family-centered
religious education…. Evidence suggests that programs best affect students when
the family is considered part of the religious education team. When faith does
not support home activities, many youth fall prey to a religious skepticism
that grows and festers. The most successful programs involve parents sharing
their faith and receiving nurturance from each other, their children, and the
extended family of faith.”
From Family Centered Church, A New Parish Model by Gerald Foley.
Religious formation is a lifelong process. The Faith Formation Office is dedicated to guiding, encouraging, and supporting adults and children in their ongoing spiritual enrichment. The staff strives to support all parents in their role as the primary educators of faith for their children. We are here to help you!
One of our goals is to help parents bring practical faith experiences into everyday life at home.
Parents, we offer you a chance to be involved in the faith development of your child through your participation in our Faith Formation programs. Our programs range from pre-K through 5th grade, Jr. High Youth Ministry for 6th through 8th grade students, and High School Youth Ministry for 9th through 12th grade students. To receive registration information for the fall programs, or if you would like to know more about our other programs, please call Nancy Labbé, Sue Dick, or Karen Laverriere at the Faith Formation office, 282-4812.
A child must attend a Family Catechesis/Religious Education program and be present at Mass for at least the year prior to starting preparation for the reception of the sacraments. The earliest any child is available to receive the sacraments would be during the second grade, or after the completion of his or her seventh year of age.
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church…
“The Latin Church… reserves the admission of Holy Communion to those who have attained the age of reason…” (CC1244). The Church canonically interprets “the age of reason” to be the completion of the seventh year of age. “At the completion of the seventh year of age one is presumed to have the use of reason” (Can.97).
2008–2009 Catechist Sign-Up: We are recruiting volunteers to be catechists next fall Lesson plans, activities, and supplies are provided. All catechists take part in Safe Environment Training and are provided opportunities to deepen their faith and learn new methods of catechesis through workshops. If you are interested in sharing your faith with the children please contact the Religious Education Office at 282-6392.

If you
have a child seven years of age or older who has never received any religious
education or has not been Baptized, we would like to welcome them to be part of
our children’s Initiation Process (RCIC). This journey prepares the child and
their family for reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and
First Eucharist. We are now interviewing families and we would love to work
with you. If you have any interest or need to get more information call Nancy
Labbé at 282-4812.

We highly recommend that parents call us while they are expecting to make plans to prepare for their child’s Baptism.
We will be offering Baptism Preparation every month, so it is really important that if
you know anyone who is expecting to please have them call us so we can help
them prepare for this wonderful event! We look forward to working with young
parents and it seems a lot easier on the parents to attend the Baptism Prep
Sessions before the little one arrives. Call your Office of Faith Formation for
more information.

Inspirational Quote for Today—“Life is made up of little things. It is seldom that occasion offers itself for doing a great deed. True greatness consists in being great in all little things. Let us be willing to keep doing a little good rather than waiting to do a great deal of good all at once.”—Dr. W. S. K. Yeaple
A Scriptural Reflection on Stewardship--Today’s first reading reminds us that “Those who are just must be kind.” If our words and deeds are kind and selfless, we will be like the good seed in the Gospel parable and gathered as wheat in the Lord’s harvest.

LIFE-LONG LEARNING: From the moment of our first breath and all
the moments thereafter we are in a process of Life-Long Learning, whether it’s
learning that the fist which is initially used for sucking on
becomes―wonder of wonders―
fingers that can grasp objects for inspection and draw things to ourselves to be further gnawed on, or the first toddling steps of our faith journey as Catholics and drawing towards ourselves for inspection the spiritual dimension of our lives, we are forever unraveling the mystery, gift and graces of our existence.
One of the ways our parish offers assistance to parents and grandparents to help unravel the treasure and traditions of our Catholic faith for our parish children is in classroom-based faith formation and sacramental preparation programs. We have a loyal and conscientious team of Catechists who are looking forward to fostering our children’s relationship with Jesus and His Church. We invite you to register your child/grandchild/teen for the new sessions which will begin in September. Yellow registration forms may be found in the Vestibule. PAUL OF
On the road to

Paul’s apostolate difficulties were not lacking, which he faced with courage
for love of Christ. Paul makes it clear that he would not have been able to
face difficult and at times desperate situations if he did not have a reason of
absolute value, before which nothing could be considered insurmountable. For
Paul, this reason is Jesus Christ of whom he writes: “The love of Christ impels us… .”
