Faith is a precious gift, a unique bond that we have with God. God promises us to be our God and invites us to be His people.
In the Rite of Baptism for children, you will be asked, "What do you ask of God's Church for your Child?"
The intended response is "baptism" or "faith" or "entrance into the Church." The minister of Baptism will then remind you that in requesting baptism for your child, you are accepting responsibility of training your child in the practice of faith. In the concluding blessing over the father and mother, he will pray that the parents be the first teachers of faith, that they also be the best of teachers bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do.
Parents and godparents have an awesome but joyful responsibility to assists their child and godchild in the ways of the faith. The Church seeks to assist the parents and god-parents with their responsibility. Our parish has adopted specific helps to insure this commitment is carried out.
What is the first thing you need to do? You need to contact the parish office at 282-3321 and make an appointment to speak with one of our pastoral ministers.
What other requirements are there?
Parents must be registered
members of the parish who have been attending Mass on a regular basis for at
least four months prior to the baptism.
Parents must complete
a preparation program prior to the baptism. This consists of two sessions, conducted
by our pastoral minister, and one team couple. We strongly encourage you to
register for these sessions prior to the birth of your child.
Although only one godparent is essential, the Church suggests that both a godmother and godfather be chosen to serve as witnesses. the choice of godparents should reflect the importance of their role. It is not an honorary role, but rather one of Christian support.
One of the godparents must be a confirmed Catholic who is practicing his/her religion. Under diocesan norms, godparents must also attend the baptism sessions. All baptisms are celebrated at one of the weekend Masses on the last Sunday of the month. the exact date will be discussed with you after completing the preparation sessions.
